Second Look: Erica Spindler’s WATCH ME DIE

(Egawds!  It’s an adult book review!)

Title: Watch Me Die
Author: Erica Spindler
Genre: Mystery, Thriller, Suspense
Age: Adult (18+)

Six years after Hurricane Katrina, the residents of New Orleans are still feeling the affects.  Mira Gallier, one of the book’s main characters, lost her husband during Katrina.  She’s beginning to finally let go of him when she starts to believe he’s actually alive.  She smells his cologne.  She sees his imprint in their unused bed.  She gets a phone call from him.  On top of this, Gallier is forced to deal with the fact that there are murders occurring in NO that are revolving around her and the legend of Mary Magdalene and the 7 demons that Christ expelled from her body.  It becomes Detective Spencer Malone’s job to make sure that Mira isn’t the last victim on the killer’s list while dealing with his own problems in the force.

I loved it.  The chapters are extremely short and easy to read quickly.  Spindler has a strong writing style and I was constantly guessing and re-guessing who was responsible for the terrorizing of Mira and who was after her.  I was surprised by the end to find out the answer to both questions.  I also really liked the religious story intertwined throughout the story.  I’m a sucker for anything related to Magdalene and this was an interesting take.  It was still a mystery and a detective story without being overly religious or throwing it down your through (much like many thought THE DA VINCI CODE did).  If you like thrillers, check this one out.

A solid 8/10.
